Which are the signs of the zodiac?
In astronomy zodiac comes from the Greek word zodiakos that means wheel animals and refers to the place where you can find the constellations that is the ecilptic, each one contains the zodiac signs and in astrology gives a specific behavior to the person who born within the predetermined dates of each sign.
The division of the ecliptic into the zodiacal signs originates in Babylonian during the first half of the 1st millennium BCE. Babylonian astronomers at some stage during the early 1st millennium BC divided the ecliptic into twelve equal zones of celestial longitude to create the first known celestial coordinate system: a coordinate system that boasts some advantages over modern systems (such as equatorial coordinate system). The Babylonian calendar as it stood in the 7th century BCE assigned each month to a sign, beginning with the position of the Sun at vernal equinox, which, at the time, was depicted as the Aries constellation, for which reason the first constellation is still called "Aries" even after the vernal equinox has moved away from the Aries constellation due to the slow precession of the Earth's axis of rotation. Knowledge of the Babylonian zodiac is also reflected in the Hebrew Bible. E. W. Bullinger interpreted the creatures appearing in the books of Ezekiel and Revelation as the middle signs of the four quarters of the Zodiac, with the Lion as Leo, the Bull is Taurus, the Man representing Aquarius and the Eagle representing Scorpio. Some authors have linked the twelve tribes of Israel with the twelve signs. Martin and others have argued that the arrangement of the tribes around the Tabernacle (reported in the Book of Numbers) corresponded to the order of the Zodiac, with Judah, Reuben, Ephraim and Dan representing the middle signs of Leo, Aquarius, Taurus and Scorpio, respectively. Such connections were taken up by Thomas Mann, who in his novel Joseph and His Brothers, attributes characteristics of a sign of the zodiac to each tribe in his rendition of the Blessing of Jacob.
Zodiac name comes from the fact that most of these constellations are named after animals, deriving the word from the Greek zodiac zoon "animal".
Isaac Newton proposed the theory that the twelve names of the ancient zodiacal constellations paid homage to the myth of Jason and the agronautas and his journey in search of the Golden Fleece. So Aries fleece refers to himself, Leo the hero Heracles (Roman Hercules), wearing lion skin Cithaeron, Gemini the twins Castor and Pollux, Virgo the priestess of the temple where they guarded the fleece, and so on.
* Aries: The Ram with whom traveled Frixio and Hele, when they left their homeland to reach Colchis. It was then the Golden Fleece.
* Taurus: There are two versions 1) The Bull of Crete, a mythical beast that lived in that area. 2) The form adopted when Zeus kidnapped Europe.
* Gemini twins Castor and Pollux. Pollux was immortal, and his brother Castor. When Castor died, Pollux gave his immortality to save his brother.
* Cancer: crab that Hera sent to help the Hydra of Lerna, when it fought against Hercules.
* Leo: The Lion of Nemea, killed by Hercules, who strangled him, because his skin was impenetrable. The hero with his own claws skinned (the one that could hurt him) and stayed skin as its symbol.
* Virgo: The myth is Astraea, daughter titánide CEO and Phoebe, still having had an affair with fellow Titan Perses, whose union was the result of Hecate (Goddess of Darkness and the Crossroads), virtuously resisted the ravings Zeus not to become another adventure carnal "thunder." Because of this island was turned into an almost deserted and abandoned, Ortigia.
* Libra: Myth says that is attributed to the goddess of Justice, as well as illustrating ancient Roman depictions of Julius Caesar carrying a balance, symbolizing his power and justice. Later the Roman ruler would be deleted and the figure would keep the balance.
* Scorpio scorpion that Artemis sent the giant hunter Orion. As Orion was a little short of mind, stepped and drove the scorpion sting. Both died and Zeus placed opposite each other, so they do not would fight.
* Sagittarius: The Centaur Chiron, medical doctors, tired of his immortal status, decided to change it for the salvation of Prometheus. When the deal was finalized, Prometheus asked "Why did you do that? Now you're dead, much as you tire, you will not be able to change ..."
* Ophiuchus: God of the stick and the serpent, known in other mythologies, currently number 13 zodiac sign, due to the precision of merit the motion of the earth's axis.
* Capricorn: Representation of the goat Amalthea, which suckled Zeus when his mother Rhea hid him from sight of his father Cronos.
* Aquarius: The young Ganymede, the cupbearer of the gods on Olympus. An extremely beautiful girl who got the love of the God Zeus.
* Pisces: When the gods fled the Titan Typhon, many adopted animal forms. Ares and Aphrodite did in the form of fish were caught by a fisherman. Other sources say they were the damned Cadmus and Harmonia who were caught.
